This is it the ‘witching hour‘, ‘the last chance saloon‘, only three rounds of the championship to go.

The short distance championship is made up of any two tens and a twenty five from the club time trials. The last three are a chance to improve times or a last chance to qualify if you have not yet ridden any rounds. For the club riders there are the championship trophies to race for as well as the ladies and veterans prizes. For the ‘visiting’ riders there is a change to win bronze, silver or the coverted gold club medals awarded at the club prize presentation.

It was with interest that people noticed Dominic Munellys car in the car park / strip. Was he practicing for the forthcoming SPOCO 10 to be held later in the year? Or was he trying to qualify for one of the gold medals, maybe even beat last years winner of the visitors league Harry Walker?

The night had promised to be a good night for racing with the forecast saying that the rain present through out the day would clear by four pm. A temperature of 16 degrees with a 5mph wind blowing to the South West, 1007Mb of pressure and a relative humidity of 82 were promised. However at 6.15pm the heavens opened and it looked like the race would be off. The rain however stopped and people started to get ready to race. Ritchie had been lent some race wheels by Craig but started to look nervous when Craig mentioned that the tyres did not have much grip in the wet!!

Report from the course (thanks for the tip off Roger) said that the lane from Ogle to Belsay was flooded and to aim to ride down the centre of the road on the crest of the tarmac. Out on the course large puddles had to be avoided. As it happened the conditions had improved along the leg from Ogle to Belsay with the road passable without too much drama. The wind forecast looked to be about right with high speeds being recorded on the run back toward Ponteland.

Word reach the strip that there had been two punctures out on the course. One was Peter Schultz and one was Dominic…. The chance to qualify for a Vagabond medal had slipped the grasp of both riders. On the night the fastest time was recorded by David Robinson from Haydn Maughan with Howard first Vagabond in third. Ritchie got round on the less than grippy tyres without any dramas.

Overall, the results made for no change in the BAR standings for the leading three Vagabond riders. Several riders completed their qualifying rides though, most notably Dave Robinson coming straight in at 2nd place, whilst a number of riders further down the table have improved on their qualifying times.

Please note corrected times for Ray Bell and Andy Hale from those read out on the night.
