Don's 24 Hours

Post by Roger Clarke » Fri Jul 20, 2018 4:06 pm

This weekend Don Speight is riding in the National 24 hour championship down in Shropshire. I know he has done a huge amount of preparation for this race. The weather forecast looks pretty good, and hopefully it won't be too hot (or too cold overnight), so all Don needs now is for luck to be on his side during the race. Hopefully he will clock a big number of miles in his ride!

Have seen online that temporary traffic lights have popped up on the 24 hour course in a place that is fairly essential for the race - used Saturday afternoon and on the night time circuit. However, the organisers are masters of rearranging the course (including remeasuring on the day if necessary) so I'm sure they are contingency planning right now and will come up with something if they need to. Fingers crossed the lights get removed.

Some split times and distances now available...

Don passed through 110 miles in 5:29, so bang on his target of starting at 20mph. This in spite of the circuit they are having to use being hillier than the original course. At 160 miles he was on 8 hours 33 minutes, so clearly going strong as he headed into the night time circuit.

Don is nearly finishing now I guess, but have just seen distances around about the halfway mark. Don had covered 216 miles in 11:50, so I imagine he would be happy with being in that position and it set him up well for recording a big distance over the second half. Hope it hasn't been too hot in Shropshire today!

Fantastic result Don and well done - perfectly ridden to take the Vags record by just enough if the provisional result is correct. Tell us all about it when you have recovered.
