8 Toughest Sportive routes in the UK (Susie's Challenge)

Post by Austin Wilcock » Tue Mar 27, 2018 6:41 pm

Throughout this year Vagabond Suzanne Harrison (Susie) will be completing the 8 toughest sportive routes as advertised by Cycling Weekly.
Susie is taking on this huge challenge to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society in memory of her mother who died from complications due to Dementia in 2016.

If you wish to make a donation please go to her Just Giving page. (sorry but I don't know how to insert a direct link)
Susie starts her challenge in Scotland this Easter, taking on the 89ml route with 7000ft of ascent including Britain's longest climb, Belach Na Ba
(if you are still to plan your Easter break feel free to join her at Kinlochewe over the Easter weekend)

Susie thanks you for your donations in advance and extends an invitation to any Tyneside Vagabonds who may like to join her on any of the other rides she plans to complete which are listed below.

Forest of Bowland 22nd April 100ml with 8,074ft ascent start Milnthorpe Cumbria
Tour of the Peaks 12th May 115ml with 10,000ft of ascent start Bakewell Derbyshire
Wiggle Sussex Gran Fondo 122ml with 4,963ft of ascent start Fontwell West Sussex (this is the actual date of the event and Susie has entered, so if you intend to join her for this ride you will need to enter the event)
Fred Whitton 9th June 122ml 12,467ft of ascent start Grasmere
The Monster 23rd June 186ml with 21,325ft of ascent start Llandovery Wales

July/Aug dates tbc for Struggle on the Moors 110ml with 10,239ft of ascent start Ampleforth Abbey North Yorkshire
and Scarborough Sportive route 120ml with 11,000ft of ascent.

If you wish to contact Susie regarding a donation or joining her on one or more of the rides tel. her on 07968392836
:D
*remember apart from the Wiggle ride, Susie's rides will take place outside of the Sportive dates, so if you do join her you will not have entry fees to pay

On Easter Saturday in fantastic weather Susie completed the first of her 8 of the UK's hardest sportive routes rides for the Alzheimer's Society, the Belach Mor which included Britain's longest climb Belach Na Ba. The route was 90ml with 6,900ft of ascent. Accompanying her were her friend Graham and Vags Lynda and Austin. Susie's friend Gavin and Vag Ker provided encouragement, support and photographic duties.

A great weekend was had by all.
Next up Forest of Bowland sportive route on Sunday April 22nd starting at Milnthorpe Cumbria 100ml with 8,074ft of ascent. Any Vags wanting to join Susie on this ride contact her via the forum or her mobile (details on earlier post)
Or if you just want to donate to the Alzheimer's Society visit her Just Giving page.

Many congratulations! That sounds a tough one. Good luck with the rest of the challenges.

Wow, this is an amazingly hard challenge! Any one of these events would be worth sponsorship and some (most) of them sound horrendous. I always appreciate someone who really stretches themselves for a sponsored event, so Susie I'll sponsor you £5 for each event and make it up to £50 for finishing them all. The very best of luck, especially with the Monster!

Bowland update. Change of plan, Suzy will now be tackling the route as a sportive entrant on Sunday 15th April accompanied by Austin. Anyone else wanting to join us are very welcome but will have to register and pay the admission cost subject to availability.

Suzy's challenge update
Forest of Bowland ride completed yesterday, 100ml with 8,734ft of ascent. I'm a bit biased coming from Lancashire, but the riding around the Trough of Bowland is some of the best countryside in the country, and plenty of hills!
The weather was mostly kind to us dry and overcast but the headwind for the first 50mls made for tough going, but the tailwind ascending Cross of Greet was welcome, but the half hour of torrential rain 20mls from the end was not.

Next up Suzy is tackling Tour of the Peaks Saturday 12th May starting in Bakewell Derbyshire. I'll be on Vags MTT duties so will not be riding this one, but currently there are a couple of other Vags riding it with Suzy. If you are not involved in the MTT and fancy a mountain challenge of a different sort contact Suzy directly, or if you would simply like to make a donation to her Just Giving page follow the link posted earlier in the thread.

It's about time for an update on Suzy's challenge.
After a successful foray into the Peak District 115mls 10,000ft of climbing accompanied by Vag Simon Simms, Suzy took on the best that Sussex had to offer on the Wiggle Gran Fondo, a solo ride of 122mls and 5,000ft of climbing, for which she received the Gold award, but which was really just the hors d'oeuvres for the Fred Whitton Challenge via the Classic route from Coniston the following weekend.

On the 'Fred' Suzy was accompanied part way by several friends including the ever present Gavin, and all the way round by Keith Briggs, new Vag 22yr old Lewis and his dad Kevin and Austin Wilcock. The route was 109mls with 12,209ft of climbing and included the iconic and challenging Hardknott Pass quickly followed by the much easier but steep Wrynose Pass towards the end of the ride. The weather was fantastic but for a heavy shower for the ascent of Honister Pass which justified Lewis bringing his heavy winter bike with mudguards! Chapeau Lewis. I think he just wanted to give his dad a chance to keep up with him.

Special mention must go to Dawn Briggs and Ker for providing the picnic at Whinlatter Pass, it was much appreciated, as was the send off from Lynda Parkin who came over specially to see Suzy off before whizzing off back to Newcastle to support her lad running the Blaydon Race.

All in all a great weekend topped off by a swim in Coniston by the lasses and a paddle for the boys.
Next up the Welsh Monster a brutal 186mls and 21,325ft of climbing on 23rd June. Conveniently I'm busy sticking spokes in my eyes that day, but for anyone up for that challenge to support Suzy just get in touch with her.
If you can't make the ride but would like to show your support for Suzy by contributing to her Just Giving page it would be most appreciated. The link is earlier in the thread.
And perhaps Dawn, Lynda or Ker could post a piccie of Suzy and the riders setting off and at the end if they can.

Chapeau Suzy

After a gruelling Welsh Monster ride of 300km and almost 22,000ft of ascent Suzy turns her attention to a ride closer to home for her next challenge, The Struggle on the Moors, 110mls with 10,000+ feet of ascent on Saturday 21st July.

A number of her cycling buddies will be joining her for this one and if you like the hills there is nowhere finer than Yorkshire (that's praise indeed coming from a Lancashire lad), so if you want to join Suzy on this ride for part or all of the ride we are setting off from the small village of Osmotherley at 8am on Saturday 21st July.

Osmotherley is easily reached from the A19 and is about 1hr 15min drive from Newcastle.
If you do intend to join us please contact Suzy direct or myself through the forum to give us an idea of numbers.
